Activity Instructions

1.Introduction: "When you hear 'agriculture' or 'farming,' what comes to mind?" Discuss initial ideas and write them down. Challenge assumptions: Show them a copy of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’. Explain: "Today, we're going to investigate how modern agriculture is changing and what diverse career opportunities it offers.”

2.Activity: Agriculture Job Profiles.

Distribute/display pages 6 - 11 of ‘A Window Into Outdoors’ to small groups (2-3 pupils) and ask the pupils to read them.

Direct pupils to the ‘case study’ pages featuring Nia Hunter and Kirsty Murden.

"Read about Nia Hunter and Kirsty Murden. Ask the pupils to answer the following questions about Nia and Kirsty. Alternatively they can complete the job profile sheet"

"What is their job title?"

"What do they enjoy most about their job? (Refer to their quotes)."

"What skills do you think Nia (Farm Worker) needs for her role? What about Kirsty (Self-Employed Agricultural Worker)?”

“How are their jobs different and similar?"

3."How do their jobs show responsibility for animals or their own work?”

4.Wrap Up:

Recap: "What new things have you learned about careers in agriculture today? Is it just about farmers on tractors?"

"Do any of these careers spark your interest? Why? What skills do you already have that could be useful in these areas, even from hobbies or other subjects?"

"Why do you think it's important for us to know about industries like agriculture, even if we don't plan to work in them?" (e.g., where our food comes from, caring for the environment).

Extension Task:

1.Ask the pupils to look up the Lantra Scotland website and find out about 5 careers that they didn’t know were part of the agricultural sector. Now ask them to create a job advert for one of the jobs.
